Indianapolis (January 7, 2021)— Families First has received a $250,000 grant from Lilly Endowment Inc., which is making a series of grants to help organizations working to mitigate the human and economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in Marion County.

Families First will use the grant to support its domestic violence recovery program. With this funding, Families First will be able to continue its commitment to provide housing to individuals and families who have suffered severe domestic violence, in order to find safety from their abusers.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police has documented an average of 125% increase in domestic violence related calls during the pandemic, and the Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence indicates that domestic violence-related deaths have increased by 86%.

Families First will use this grant to continue to provide a safe alternative to shelter for survivors, their children, and family pets/support animals who are fleeing domestic violence and seeking a safe living space. The organization provides emergency hotel placement based on the client need. Placement could be for as short as one night, while the survivor makes other arrangements, or for an extended period, while the survivor works with a Families First advocate to create a plan for the next step in their journey.

“Tension and stress in the home continue to rise as the pandemic continues to impact our community in a variety of ways,” says David Siler, President and CEO of Families First. “Families First has witnessed the success of the domestic violence recovery program and receiving the $250,000 grant from Lilly Endowment means that our advocates can continue to serve families during these unprecedented times.”

Families First is one of 38 organizations that Lilly Endowment has made grants to in its latest round of funding to help organizations respond to the pandemic’s effect on communities in Indianapolis. Since March 2020, Lilly Endowment has made nearly $208 million in grants related to COVID-19.
